29 weeks. A somber look back, and pictures!!

I've thought a lot about this particular week.  Two and a half years ago, I was in Brunswick, GA & got a call from my mom.  It was the end of a business trip & Josh and I were about to head to my parents house in NC to pick up our doggies & take them back to Atlanta, where we lived.

My mom was calling to tell me that my oldest brother's twins were born.  It confused me at first... they weren't due until the end of September, and last I'd checked, it was the beginning of July.  Sure enough, they were 11 weeks early.

If that means nothing to you, I'll give you an overview.  A pregnancy is typically 40 weeks.  So that's not even 3/4 way through the pregnancy-- she had nearly 3 months left to go!  That's a whole different season!!

I wrote about that weekend here.

Looking back over those pictures, it's hard to imagine that one of those is in my belly right now!  It amazed me how normal Sunaura looked... until you put your hand next to her... and realized she was tiny!  She was such a fighter, too.  The first time I saw her in the NICU, she had pulled the tube out of her nose.  The nurse walked by & stopped to put it back, saying, "She keeps pulling her oxygen off of her nose!"

And look at her now...

Goodness, I love that kid!

My baby should be right around 2.5 lbs & about 15 inches long now.  She's soaking up a lot of calcium & other nutrients from my body these days, too, which explains why I've been downing milk like it's going out of style!  Seriously, I used to hardly drink milk at all... and now?  Well, yesterday I just bought two gallons at the store because I'm sick of running out of milk before the week is up.

I love how things like that work.  I researched a lot when I first got pregnant about what to eat, what not to eat, etc.  And the conclusion I kind of came to was that listening to your body is a pretty powerful thing!  And so that's mostly what I've done.  I don't count every calorie.  I find myself wanting salads sometimes, and milk at other times.  It also helped me power through morning sickness.  And when it came to prenatal vitamins, I haven't taken them religiously because, well... there's no use in taking them if I'm just going to vomit them back up!  So I take them when I know my body is strong enough to handle them.  And when I'm not?  Well, I better try to eat super nutrient rich foods!

Okay, enough rambling for today... here's a picture from our maternity session this weekend by this lovely lady!  I'm in love with how she perfectly captured our family!

And yes... my hair is darker now... I'm loving it!

14 September 2011

I should be embarrassed about this picture, but I'm not.

I'm a little behind the times, but losing the internet for a day will do that to a girl!  And we just happened to lose internet on the same day that I was part of a blog party!  I guest posted over on shannon*bear with a fun photography tip, as well as an embarrassing picture of me.

And hello, who doesn't want to see an embarrassing picture of me?  And for the record, you can see this picture in real life when you book me for a photo session (aw snap, did I throw out a shameless self promote there?)

So head on over to shannon*bear and see what you missed!

*PS: I'm not really embarrassed... because sometimes you have to do what it takes to get the shot!

Funny Friday to kick your weekend off right!

This blog has me laughing in fits!  The rawness of parenthood is revealed.

Here's a screenshot of the main page.  I love the pictures.  I mean, really, who has time to catch all this magical blog stuff on camera?  And the dry sense of humor-- I love it!

It appears to be a somewhat new blog seeing as how there aren't very many posts, but I hope it sticks around!

5 foot metal chickens & how they become necessities in your life.

You know when you get so tickled that tears actually start to form and before you know it you're wiping tears off your face while laughing?

Yeah, me neither.

But anyway, I was reading this hee-larious blog post the other day and couldn't help but share it with you.

It's one woman's story of how she came to have a 5 foot metal chicken at her house.  A 5 foot metal chicken, you say?  Why yes, similar to this one, which currently resides at my parents house.

And because not everyone has a 5 foot metal chicken in their yard, I thought I may explain the perfectly good reason as to why they have one.  My mom actually bought it for my dad.  This one person in town had decided to sell stuff like this out of their front yard & my dad drove by it every day wanting it.  He finally stopped & asked how much and it was like $600!  He decided that that was just too much, even though he was in love with it.

He continued to ooh & ahh over it and over time, it became more of a joke than anything.  I mean, really, it's a 5 foot metal chicken, but there's something about it that makes you want need it in your yard!  I like to think of it as a very passive form of deviance (a trait I possess myself, which is why I occasionally eat ice cream for lunch-- my form of deviance.  I'm such a loser).

A few months later it was still there and my mom bought it for my dad's birthday or something for a 'deal.'  I can't remember the exact price (although it was hundreds less), but it was still more than anyone would want to pay for a 5 foot metal chicken.  But because he'd been talking about that stupid chicken for the better part of a year, it was his!

For years now it has proudly stood at the end of their driveway, welcoming anyone who dares to enter visitors.

And occasionally we'll see other family members of our dear chicken out & about.  This little guy was in Greenville, SC & made by Chicken Man Art!  With a name like that, my dad will buy a lot of items at your store.  :)

I promise my dad's not actually crazy, despite the whole 'owning a 5 foot metal chicken' thing- he's just doing a crazy face for this picture!
So in case you're still reading this (why?) and haven't skipped over to that other blog I talked about yet, you definitely need to head over there now-- you will laugh until you cry!  Just click here.

Blogs I Love Week: Heir to Blair

Last but not least, let's talk about Blair.

Well, sort of.  Blair is actually Beth Anne.  And she has the most fabulous blog.

I "met" her on the interwebs years ago when we were both planning our weddings through TheKnot.com. It's not like we talk or anything, but I do keep up with her awesome blog.

It's brutally honest & real.  You don't have to wonder what's going on in her life or what her thoughts are.  She's an open book & that's cool.  She shares about the ups and downs of motherhood.  From severe postpartum depression to loving every single minute with her toddler to the struggles of being a working mom, she brings everything to the table and makes you feel like you're best buds.

Check it out and tell me you're not hooked!

Blogs I Love Week: People I Know

At this point in my cruise I should have a great tan and have probably eaten way too much lobster.  It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it!

So here's a few blogs from people I actually know.  Most of them are my husbands co-workers... they're birthing blogs like some people change underwear, but that's a great thing!  They're a fabulous group of people that need to share their awesome thoughts & ideas!

In no particular order (okay, actually, it's in the order that I'm finding the links the fastest):

*bonus points just for the fabulous name*

Yup... I probably missed some, but that's because I couldn't find a link, so share it in the comments!

Blogs I Love Week: I Heart Faces

Because so many of my readers love photography & I get questions about it all. the. time. I thought I'd share I Heart Faces with y'all!

I love this site so much because it's so interactive.  They have photo challenges where you can enter your own picture and see other's interpretations of the same theme.  They also have guests posts weekly from fabulous photographers on a variety of topics.  And it's not just focused on beginners or professionals- there is a wide array of each on there to help each other learn.

Very much a positive atmosphere to learn more about photography, or just to look at some great photos!

My very favorite thing about I Heart Faces is the obvious... they have a huge focus on faces.  And so do I! I love the creatives shots, but when it comes down to it, I'm all about getting a fabulous shot of a family where every single face is smiling perfectly and has the correct exposure, etc.

Go check them out and enjoy!

Blogs I Love Week: Is That Natural?

This girl will crack you up: Meet Kristi from 'Is That Natural?'

The title really says it all... she a woman outnumbered by the males in her home (hubby + 2 young sons) and it has been said that a visit to her house is not complete without her younger son stripping down to his underwear.

It's true... I'm pretty sure it's happened every single time I've been over there!  And that's exactly what makes her blog so entertaining!  She has short & sweet posts that keep you reading day after day.

Well, what are you waiting for?  Go check out 'Is That Natural?'

Blogs I Love Week: Stuff Christians Like

You may have heard of 'Stuff White People Like.'  It's a satirical blog.

Well, let me introduce you to 'Stuff Christians Like.'  It's totally ripped off of that, and hilarious as all get out.

In this blog Jon Acuff explores things like:

You know... the important stuff.  It's a satirical blog about things that Christians do that are maybe just a teeny tiny bit completely weird.  Honestly, if you can't poke fun at yourself, then who can you poke fun at?

I have to say, I've been a fan for awhile.  We used to go to church together (although thousands of others went there as well and I never actually met him, but my husband totally volunteered with him) and now he works for Dave Ramsey... what could be cooler than that?

So jump on over and check out his blog... Hope you find it as funny as I do!

Blogs I Love Week: Robshep.com

Second day of our cruise!  Hope your life is going well, cause I'm probably laying by the pool about right now!

For today's blog, I thought I'd share about someone who I actually know.  Not that I don't know The Pioneer Woman, because really, we're like BFF's and all.

Today is all about RobShep.com.  He works with my husband and it was wonderful when we moved here to see that someone else blogs as often as I do!  You see, most people create a blog, write three entries over the next week, and then ignore it for a month or two until they get a burst or writing creativity or someone says, "Hey, don't you have a blog?"

So yeah... like I was saying, nice to know someone else in real life who blogs regularly, and has for awhile.

Rob just had twins and they are the cutest things ever!  So if you like sports or movies or babies, this is the blog for you.

If that's not enough for you, he also recently went skydiving (which I wouldn't let my husband do at this point in time).

Let's talk about that for a minute.  His wife just gave birth to twins after years of trying and then finally going through IVF.  On all accounts, they worked hard for those twins!  And before either of them even comes close to 10 lbs, he's skydiving? And his wife all but made him do it?!  From what I've heard, their convo went something like this:

"Honey, can I go skydiving for work?"

"YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!"

...or something like that.

So go on over and check out his blog.  Remember: movies, sports, babies.

Blogs I Love Week: The Pioneer Woman

Hey there!

How's it going?

Me?  Well I'm headed to the Bahamas today, so I'd say I'm doing pretty well!

This next week, I thought I'd take a break and share with you some blogs that I love.  Some of them are new, some have been around forever.  Some are from friends, some are from people I've never met.  They are all different, but I hope you'll like some of them!

Today, I'd like to share with you one of my faves: The Pioneer Woman!

If you have a spare 3 hours, go on over & check out her site.  The more you read, the cooler she gets.  I pretty much want to be her.  She has lots of animals and a rich husband, but totally plays it up that she's just a normal gal.

Heads up: She's not normal.  She's about as normal as The Desperate Housewives on Wisteria Lane.  But that's okay, because I love them, too!

Here's a screenshot of her website.  It's basically a bunch of blogs put together.  The tabs at the top are the different blogs: Confessions; Cooking; Photography; Home & Garden; Homeschooling; Tasty Kitchen.

You read that right... TWO food blogs!  (not that I read those)

She also talks about calf nuts and burning pastures a lot.  Did I tell you she lives on a huge ranch in Oklahoma?

Oh, and she's also written a book about her love story with her hubby who she affectionately calls Marlboro Man, a cookbook, and most recently, a children's book.

And she hosts contests and giveaways almost weekly.

Enjoy!

Inspiration & blog love.

About a year ago I was searching through blogs and found this one.  It's called Aura joon.

It instantly intrigued me because her first name is Aura.  I have a niece named Sunaura and I thought it was cool.

I kept on reading because everything about her is so darn interesting!  I love her style, her photography, her zest for life.

But along the way I forgot to check back & eventually forgot altogether until I saw her link again on another blog.  Then I spent 30 minutes blog stalking!  Last time I read she was a carefree young married woman and now she's about to have a baby!

Joon, by the way, is not her middle or last name.  It means "sweetheart" or "dear" in Farsi.  Bonus points because I actually know what Farsi is-- I used to hire linguist who could translate Pashto, Dari (Farsi) & English.

At any rate, go on over, check it out, and enjoy her style!  She talks about gardening, clothes, and has tons of neat DIY items.

Oh, and after admiring her style so much, I was overjoyed to find that I have the same skirt as her!

Now I just need to go buy the rest of the wardrobe!

Catalog Living.

One of my friends showed me this website the other day and it is hilarious!  I love how it's understated but so comically genius all at the same time.

I wish I had thought of it first!

And if that wasn't enough for you (it seems to be a fairly new blog), then here's one with similar taste:  Unhappy Hipsters

17 June 2010

Erm.

I try not to post really strong views on my blog because, honestly, I just like a place where everything can be fun, light, and fluffy.  This is my light and fluffy place (except when I change my mind).

But.  There's always a 'but,' isn't there?

Sometimes things just come my way and I can't ignore them.  This is one of those.  It was posted on Failbook.com the other day, and it perfectly shows one of my major pet peeves.

*cringes*

What's your pet peeve?  What makes you so ill that you have no words to describe it?

Understanding how metrosexual your worship leader is. (A handy guide)

Jon Acuff (that's A-cuff... NOT uh-CUFF) is pretty much a genius.  Surf over to his blog and check out his post on "Understanding how metrosexual your worship leader is. (A handy guide)"

You're life may not ever be the same.

And because I know you're wondering, Josh scored a 30.  And I'm solely responsible for keeping him from being above a 50.  It's because I refuse to let him buy those black rimmed glasses.  Or designer jeans. Or a french press. Or the white belt, the hats, an Audi.  Or Vitamin Water, Nooma videos (he only has one), an iPhone, or shop at Urban Outfitters.  And I will most definitely not let him have a man bag.

Because, literally, he would have all those if I didn't stop him.

Especially the black rimmed glasses.

Rob Bell's glasses:

Paul DiMeo (Extreme Home Makeover), whose glasses Josh really wants:

See?  They're just ever-so-slightly dorkier.

I mean... metro.

Proof my Hubby is much cooler than me.

This is an actual conversation between me & hubby:

Me: Do you know Jon Acuff (Uh-cuff)?

Hubby: You mean Jon A-cuff?

Me: Yeah.  Like I said, do you know him?

Hubby:  Yeah.

Me: You do?  How do you know all these people?  I found his blog the other day!  It's called 'Stuff Christians Like' and it's hilarious!  But... does he just have a really dry sense of humor?

Hubby: Yeah.  Really dry.

Me: Oh good.  I would worry if he was serious about some of that stuff.  So when you say you know him... do you know him know him?  Or just know of him?

Hubby: He used to go to North Point [our old church in GA], you know.

(my attempt at trying to be cool & 'in the know')

Me: He still does... according to his blog... I think.  So wait... have you met him?

Hubby: Yeah.  He's just a normal person, Susan.  He's just a really talented writer and has a great blog.

Me: (playing it cool) Oh, I know.  His book just came out.

Hubby: Okay.

Me: So... have I met him?

Hubby: I introduced you one Sunday at InsideOut.

Me: Oh.  (pause)  Did you say, "This is Jon Acuff, the guy who writes the blog 'Stuff Christians Like'?"

Hubby:  Probably.

Me: Oh.  Well, it's a really cool blog.

----------

And you should check it out, if that's your cup of tea:

Sidenote: Mr. Acuff & my hubby are not bestie friends or anything... they're acquaintances.  He's still way cooler than me, though.  :(

The Love of a Mother

It's gotta be tough being a mom.  I don't know from experience, but it just seems to me that you have so many things to deal with: diapers, extra cleaning, extra laundry, special foods, getting them up and dressed in the morning, daycare... the list goes on and on.

I admire the ability to do all those things!

But there is a set of moms that I've come to notice over the past few years.

And admire.

They're the moms who don't get to do all those things.  The moms who would give their right leg to have to change diapers and do 3 am feedings.  Or those who get to do those, but not in a 'normal' way, always hoping, wondering, and praying for their child's future, which the doctors have insisted is very glum.

To those moms, I have no idea how you do it!  Not even the slightest clue!

And some of these moms step out.  Step out of their comfort zone and share their stories.

I love these moms.  Some of them know me, some don't.  But I'm going to share their stories.

And there are also some moms who don't step out to share their story.  I can't blame them.  It's a tough, tough thing to talk about.  And if you're reading this, send up a prayer for them.  For strength.  Because believe me, just because they don't talk or blog or create a foundation for it, that doesn't mean that they don't think about it daily, and worry, and grieve, and hope.

As I said, I'm going to share some of these stories.

Meet Sheyenne (and her hubby Sean).  Oh wait.  Let me take a minute to say that everything these moms are going though, the dads are going through, too.  They're not exempt from the feelings, pain, fear, etc.  So although I won't mention them, know that they are strong, too!

Okay so for real now, meet Sheyenne.  Right around Thanksgiving of 2009, about halfway through her pregnancy, she found out two things: it's a girl (yay!) but there is something very wrong.  That something turned out to be Triploidy, a chromosome abnormality.  And she soon learned that Whitney Jill, her daughter, would likely never take a breath of fresh air, and if she did, she wouldn't take many.

Sheyenne and I have been blogging and reading each others blogs since they were called 'internet diaries' years ago.  Reading her posts through these times were difficult.  Her pain immeasurable.  But oh so beautiful because it was the love of a mother.  A mother who is so passionate about children and life.  A mother who has so desperately wanted a child for years and was well on her way through the adoption process when she found out she was pregnant.

I cannot even begin to imagine the pain.

But you know what?  Her blogging made a difference.  A huge difference. Because I lost a niece last year.  The situation was different and I'm not sure what all the technical terms were, but she didn't come home from the hospital, and neither did Whitney.  And through her blogging, Sheyenne taught me that it was okay to have mixed-up and confused feelings about it.  That it's okay to miss someone who I never even got the chance to meet.

And I'm just one person that lives on the opposite coast from her.

This picture above was taken mid-January.  I'm guessing around 27 weeks (that's a guess).  She was so little.  She wanted to be big as a barn.  She wanted to have swollen feet and be hot all the time.  She wanted every uncomfortable pregnancy quirk to happen to her.  At least it would have meant a healthy Whitney!

On February 11, 2010, "Whitney was born into heaven."  Those are Sheyenne's words.  Isn't that a beautiful picture?

Do me a favor.  If you ever see the words 'Whitney' or 'Jill' will you take a picture and send it to Sheyenne?  Or if you send it to me, I'll make sure it gets to her.  It's a small reminder to her of Whitney.

You can visit her site at www.whitneyjill.com.

---------------------

Next up is Angie Smith.  I read her blog last year after the loss of my niece.  I cried as I read through her posts.  So if you've got a few hours days and lots of hot chocolate and tissues, read through them!

Angie had 3 little girls, two are twins, before she became pregnant with Audrey Caroline.  Halfway through her pregnancy she was told there was no hope for a life for Audrey, and that she should probably just go ahead and terminate the pregnancy (for the record, that's what Sheyenne was told, too). But that wasn't possible for Angie.  Instead, she said, "I think that my Jesus is the same as He was before I walked into this room."

Wow.

Not sure I could be that strong in the face of... all of that.

They did fun things with Audrey while she was still alive (in Angie's tummy) to create memories (Sheyenne did the same, too!).  They even took her to Disney.  I love that each person grieves in their own way.  There's not right or wrong way.

You may know Angie's husband, too.  Ever heard of Selah?

They're now expecting their fifth kiddo.  Pray for her.  That's got to be so scary.
--------
And on a different note, let's talk about Ginny for a moment.  Ginny doesn't know me, but her sister does.  And her sister likes to blog and take pictures (Blue Frame Photography-- I've mentioned her before on here).

Christmas day 2009, Ginny, her husband, and their 3 year old son, John, were driving to celebrate Christmas with family when they hit a puddle of standing water. That puddle changed their lives.  Although all were buckled in and proper safety was in check, the car spun around and hit the concrete median.  John's side took the brunt of the impact.

Witnesses rushed to help and saved John's life.

John's life, however, is different than it was before.  He's relearning a lot of things.  And undergoing numerous surgeries.  And physical therapy.

They had to remove part of his skull because of swelling.  They also removed part of his brain.

His recovery is slow, but Ginny met a point where she decided that she wasn't going to share what the doctors were saying he would or would not be able to do.  It's because she believes that he's going to far exceed those expectations.

Wow.  Strong.

So will you do me a favor and pray for these three mamas?  Their journey continues every day.

And if you have kids, go find them and hug them.

And when you see an exasperated mom screaming at her kids in the store, pray for her, too.

Kiddos aren't easy.  Just remember to be thankful, no matter what place you are in life.

Cake Wreck.

Ladies and gents, there is a website that has left me cackling since I first saw it.  May I introduce you to Cake Wrecks: When professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong.
It's a collection of professional cakes that make you go, "What the???  What were they thinking?!"

Sometimes you don't even know what they were going for (see naked mowhawk babies riding carrots above), and sometimes you can see that someone just wasn't using their noggin.

Then I saw this. Go look at it real quick.  You don't have to read it all- just look at the pictures and get the general concept.

That's when I realized.  I've been a victim of a cake wreck.

I think I'd actually blocked it from my memory.

You see, we had a budget wedding, and I looked for every way possible to cut corners.  I found some great deals, too!

Wedding dress: $300
Veil: $10
Food was made by family & photography was done by a creative friend who I knew would do a great job.

But the one area I should not have skimped on was the cake.  I say that if I could do it again with the knowledge I have now, I wouldn't have a cake at all.

Now, I won't name the bakery in question, unless you're a bride whose wedding depends on it.  But what they did was bad.

I never confronted them about it because I was embarrassed.  I thought, "Hey- they're the professionals-- guess I should have been more hands on and proactive about what I wanted it like.  Maybe I should have gone for something more simple."

But thanks to Cake Wrecks, I now know that it wasn't me.  My detailed explanation should have been enough.  My pictures and color swatches- the bakery should have been able to follow them and make my cake.

Here were some of the inspirational pictures I'd found:

See the pretty polka dot ribbon? And how simple the cake is?  I wanted this, but with an orange ribbon, and a slightly more muted pink color.  And I even told them not to worry about the flowers- we'd put those on ourselves.

Similar to this, minus the dots and the 21, of course (I wasn't even that old yet).

I told them I just wanted the pink cake and ribbon.  No flowers, no decorations whatsoever.  And above all, nothing frilly!  None of those swirly things around the edges.  Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Plain.

The cake was going to be pink for goodness sakes-- it didn't need anything else.

And I did know that they mainly dealt with butter cream frosting and that it wouldn't be as smooth as fondant.

When my mom picked up the cake, our phone conversation went like this:

"Susan?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you want a pink cake?!"
"Yeah! I told you that!  I know it's a bit bold, but it'll be fun!"
"Well, it's really pink.  Really pink.  Bright pink"
"Well it's has to be a brighter pink, mom.  I don't want a pastel pink cake!"
"Okay.  Do you want to come see it?"  (This is her way of saying, "This is really bad- you have to see it to believe it!")
"I'm way too busy.  I don't know how I'll ever get to the rehearsal dinner on time!  It'll be fine."
"Okay, but if you can fit it in, you really need to come by and see it before the wedding."

Fast forward to the wedding day.  Beautiful wedding, pictures went well.  I arrive at the reception and see this:

My heart stopped.  There were a lot of things that didn't go as planned at our wedding, but who cares?  Life goes on, right?  This made life stop for just a second. 5 minutes. forever. a while.

Sure, the DJ had no idea what song I wanted for our first dance.  I was sure he'd find something good.
Sure, I'd forgotten the photo mat that I wanted all the guests to write on.  A guest book will do.
Sure, our chocolate fountains were spewing chocolate everywhere the wind blew. It happens.

I couldn't make that up.
But it didn't bother me.
I actually thought it was kinda funny.  I should have considered the wind a little more before we got them.

No, what bothered me was that frilly-neon-glow-in-the-dark-pink cake.

It stained my face.  Neon.  Do you see that piece glowing?

And let's talk about the doily underneath.
"Nothing frilly whatsoever."  I believe those were my exact words.
(I'm having flashbacks to being at the bakery.  I can literally see the lady writing down "no frills.")
I even pointed to the pre-made cakes so she knew what I was talking about.

Thank you for sharing in this journey with me.  It's been four years, but I was finally ready to talk about it, thanks to Cake Wrecks.  I now know that it's not always the fault of the person who is ordering.  Sometimes it's just a baker/decorator who doesn't 'get' it.

Come to think of it, this really explains my obsession with Cake Boss.

*Thanks to Celeste & Alan for taking our wedding pics!
